Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank will support the development of drinking water supply and sewerage services in Bukhara Region

The Ministry of Investments and Foreign Trade has negotiated the attraction of funds from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) for the implementation of the large-scale infrastructure project “Bukhara Region Water Supply and Sewerage”.

On April 3 this year, the AIIB Board of Directors approved funding of $ 385 mln. for Uzbekistan to implement the first phase of the above project.

The aim of the project is to develop a sustainable water supply and sewerage infrastructure in priority districts of the Bukhara Region, which in turn will improve the living standards of the population and business activity in the region.

It is expected that about 1.2 million residents of the Bukhara Region will take the benefit from this project: 540 thousand residents of the region will for the first time get a centralized drinking water system, and 105 thousand people will get a centralized sewerage system.

This project is the first stage of an unprecedented large-scale project aimed at the integrated development of the water supply and sewerage system in the Bukhara Region. The second phase of the project will provide 620 thousand people more with the access to a centralized water supply and sewerage system.

In general, after the project, the total cost of which will be about $ 600 million, is completely implemented, the Bukhara Region will be fully provided with drinking water services, and all district centers of the region will use a centralized sewerage system.

For reference: Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) was established on October 24, 2014 at the initiative of the PRC authorities in order to support the implementation of infrastructure projects in the Asian region. Uzbekistan has been a member of the AIIB since November 29, 2016.

Currently, we are negotiating with the Bank a number of infrastructure projects on water supply, sewerage systems, construction and reconstruction of roads, electrification of railways, integrated development of basic infrastructure in the regions, etc. The total cost of these projects is more than $ 2.0 billion.
