European Investment Bank will support Uzbekistan to fight the economic effects of the pandemic

The Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade held a video conference with Vice President of the European Investment Bank (EIB) Lilyana Pavlova.

The dialogue disclosed measures taken by the Government of Uzbekistan to counteract the spread of coronavirus infection, as well as to reduce the impact of global crisis on the national economy and human wellbeing.

The Bank’s top officials highly appreciated promptness and effectiveness of state support for citizens and entrepreneurs during a pandemic, in particular, through establishment of the Anti-Crisis Fund to finance a wide range of activities ensuring stable environment and population security.

The EIB Vice President noted that the Bank’s top officials considered the request of the Uzbek side and decided to financially support Uzbekistan in fighting the pandemic and its economic effects. In this regard, the EIB will allocate EUR 50 million to support the national health care system and open credit lines to commercial banks of Uzbekistan amounted to EUR 80 million to finance domestic manufacturers, exporters, small and medium-sized enterprises.

During the video conference, the participants discussed implementation of the EIB project portfolio in Uzbekistan and measures to further expand cooperation.

They agreed on joint elaboration of new investment projects to bring the Bank's portfolio of projects in Uzbekistan to EUR 500 million in the near future.
