Uzbekistan – Hungary: new cooperation prospects during pandemic

On April 14 this year, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade of the Republic of Uzbekistan, S. Umurzakov, held a videoconference with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, Peter Szijjarto.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the prospects for bilateral cooperation in the investment, economic and trade based on the agreements reached during the 5th meeting of the Uzbek-Hungarian Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation. The foreign side informed on its commitment to continue work in these spheres. In view of this, priority spheres of investment cooperation include agriculture, pharmaceuticals, banking and financial sector. They will invest efforts to enhance joint projects and initiatives.

Peter Szijjarto highly appreciated the ongoing work of the Government of Uzbekistan on accession to the WTO, approval of the draft AEPC, as well as obtaining of the status of the beneficiary country of the “GSP +” system. He reported that the Government of Hungary is ready to support Uzbekistan in these initiatives through the permanent missions of Hungary in the EU structures and the WTO.

Moreover, Peter Szijjarto expressed special gratitude to the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan on behalf of the Government of Hungary for humanitarian assistance in preventing the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

The parties agreed to hold joint video sessions at the expert level involving representatives of the assigned ministries and departments to implement joint projects as the global epidemiological situation improves.

After negotiations, the parties agreed to continue development of additional measures to strengthen and expand bilateral trade and economic partnership.
